humping weight in the wait of night

mud & slush spill

into my lowas

rifle slung, on my back

the milky-white

heavens

leaking pools

of misty starlight

ceaselessly

along the

anishinaabe

tundra

we haven’t seen the sun

but

the boys march on

blue shadows in the

lonely dark
