Between the Lines of Love and Lyrics with Leo & Tingley

Leo & Tingley are a dynamic Pop-Folk duo comprised of Leo Tingley and Charlotte Tingley - formally known as Chasing Shadows. The acoustic duo cover a range of styles and genres, both covers and originals.

We spoke with the duo ahead of their new album launch to talk about the inspiration behind their music, how it united them, and what listeners can expect from them in the future.

What inspires your music?

We are inspired by our personal experiences and the desire to tell stories through music. The way our inspiration shines through in our music differs; for Ting, her writing reflects real events in an obscure fashion, while for Leo, writing represents fictional stories in a more direct way.

What is your creative process?

We find it quite challenging to have a dedicated time and space to come up with a new song, therefore our process is intuitive when inspiration and ideas come to mind.

When is your new album coming out and what can we expect from your new music?

Our new album, Between the Lines, is set to be released on Tuesday 24th September!

This album features the songs and sounds you expect from us, except this time we were able to invite more voices and instruments into the studio to create a fuller sound within our songs. We were able to work alongside professionals who are also good friends of ours to bring our vision of more than two vocals and a guitar to life.

What is your favourite part of performing?

Leo: What I love is that there’s a particular moment, often with audiences new to your sound, when the audience shifts from passively listening to really listening – sometimes it’s mid-song, often it’s at the end, and that’s such a great feeling for a performer.

Ting: New environments, fresh faces, and being able to create different emotions in a room with the change of a few bars of sound.

Would you credit music as bringing you together romantically?

Music indirectly brought us together, because it meant that our lives overlapped on a daily basis.

How does your relationship bleed into your music - are your songs a reflection of your love and things which happen in your personal lives?

We haven’t actually written about our love life or friendship in our songs - they are usually about other life experiences or fiction.

Your latest song One More Time is filled with hope - how do you wish for people to feel when they listen to your music?

We hope people enjoy our sound and can emote with the music we make, without necessarily picking one specific emotion.

What is one message that you would like people to take away from your music?

That life is full of experiences, both positive and negative. We are all on a journey and many people’s lives overlap. However, everything is relative; one person’s happiness is not equal to the next.

What shows or exciting things are coming up in 2024?

The release of Between the Lines in September is our biggest announcement for this year - but follow us on social media to stay updated with our live shows.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who want to break into the business?

Do it for the love, without necessarily expecting to get big or famous.
